Windows Disable Sleep Mode and Hibernation

Description of Modes

Sleep mode puts the computer into a lower power state. When you return to the computer you can quickly resume.

Hibernation puts the computer to sleep by saving the current state and powering off the computer. One can resume the saved state next time the computer is powered on.

Fast Startup is a combination of hibernation and shutdown.

Hybrid Sleep is a combination of sleep mode and hibernation.

Note

For changes to affect the state of the hard drive a complete Windows shutdown must be done.

Disable Sleep Mode

  1. Right mouse click on the Start Menu and going to Power Options.
  2. Left mouse click on "change plan settings" next to the used power plan.
  3. Select the value for "Put the computer to sleep" to "Never".
  4. Left mouse click on "Save Changes".

Disable Hibernation

Note

Do not do this for laptops. Instead only disable Fast Startup and Hybrid Sleep.

  1. Left mouse click on the Start Menu and type "Command Prompt".
  2. Right mouse click on "Command Prompt" and then left mouse click on "Run as Administrator".
  3. At the Administrator Command Prompt enter without double quotes "powercfg.exe /h off".
  4. Left mouse click on the X located at the top right of the window.

Disable Fast Startup

Note

These steps do not apply if hibernation has been disabled.

  1. Right mouse click on the Start Menu and going to Power Options.
  2. Left mouse click on "Choose what the power buttons do".
  3. Left mouse click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable".
  4. Left mouse click on "Fast Startup" to uncheck the box.
  5. Left mouse click on "Save changes".

Disable Hybrid Sleep

Note

These steps do not apply if hibernation or sleep has been disabled.

  1. Right mouse click on the Start Menu and going to Power Options.
  2. Left mouse click on "change plan settings" next to active power plan.
  3. Left mouse click on "change advanced power settings".
  4. Left mouse click on the plus sign next to "Sleep".
  5. Left mouse click on the plus sign next to "Allow hybrid sleep".
  6. Under "Allow hybrid sleep" > "Setting:", select the value of "Off".
  7. Left mouse click on the "OK" button.
